"FDA Regulators Request Atypical Antipsychotics Carry New Diabetes
Warning"
September 18, 2003
The FDA has requested all six atypical antipsychotics, including
Risperdal to include a new labeling warning. Links between
the antipsychotics and diabetes have been concerning enough for the
agency to issue letters to the drugs’ producers. The diabetes
link had been made awhile back but the federal agency waited until further
recent studies were performed. The drugs that will carry the new warning
labels include; Risperdal, Abilify, Geodon, Clozaril, Seroquel.
The FDA letter recommended Risperdal patients,
as well as other atypical antipsychotic patients, are monitored for
blood sugar abnormalities especially if the patient has high risk factors
like obesity and a family history of diabetes.

"Risperdal Pancreatitis Link Found"
September 2, 2003
A study has found a possible link between four antipsychotic drugs and
pancreatitis, specifically with Risperdal use. Researchers have found
192 cases of pancreatitis in the study in newer schizophrenia treatments
and 31 of the pancreatitis cases were among Risperdal patients. The
study examined all pancreatitis cases reported to the FDA or written
up in medical journals between January 1981 and February 2002.
Pancreatitis is a dangerous inflammation of the pancreas,
which produces insulin. There were 22 deaths resulting from the schizophrenia
drug link, though researchers do point out that the study has not yet
shown a direct cause and effect of using Risperdal and pancreatitis.
Already, serious Risperdal side effects have been linked to the newer
drug and the new possible Risperdal side effect link may indicate concerning
findings.
